Vladimir Putin and Gerhard Schrцder opened the Amber Room
During the Russia-EC summit, foreign visitors were invited to the Catherine Palace of the Tsarskoye Selo National Museum and Preserve. According to Rosbalt News Agency, this was followed by the grand opening of the Amber Room of the palace. The opening ceremony was conducted by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schrцder, then leaders of other countries visited the room.
Let us remind you that Memorandum of Completing the Reconstruction of the Amber Room was signed on May 13. The treasures of the Amber Room had been taken by Nazi from the Catherine Palace during World War II and were never found. The revival of the Amber Room began in 1979. About 6 tons of amber were used to construct the decorations of the room again. The amber was supplied by the Kaliningrad Amber Plant. For twenty years (from 1979 to 1999) this work was financed from the Federal Budget, and the total amount of money used for the work was 7 million 754 thousand dollars. In 1999, a contract was signed according to which the revival of the Amber Room was financed on a gratis basis by the German company Ruhrgas AG which paid for the work 3.5 million dollars.
