World’s biggest laser show on water staged in St. Petersburg on jubilee days

Hiro Yamagata’s laser show celebrating the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg will be presented on 27 and 31 May on the river Neva between Dvortsovy, Troitsky and Birzhevoy bridges, said Andrey Melnichenko, President of MDM Bank. “The project has been in preparation for one and a half years, and is now the world’s biggest laser show on water. This is our gift to all the citizens and guests of St. Petersburg,” said Mr. Melnichenko.

According to Hiro Yamagata, lasers will light up the three bridges and the area between them. The Hermitage facade will be used as a screen reflecting multicolor laser beams and images. The 45-minute long act will be performed by 24 laser systems, the strongest of which may send a laser beam 51 km long. “Just imagine 600 thousand laser beams changing their color and direction every second. This must be seen!” announced Andrey Melnichenko.

What is more, for the first time in Hiro Yamagata’s artistic career his show will be performed in St. Petersburg to musical accompaniment. The Russian company Electroshok Records and composer Artemy Artemyev will set up 200 sound systems along the Neva banks. “The show will be accompanied by serious electronic music. It will harmoniously combine classical instruments and electronic sound,” said Mr. Artemyev.

$1 mln. to finance this project was provided by the financial group MDM.

I assisted in the organization of the laser show by Hiro Yamagata. There were not 24 laser systems as you state - only 8. It is not the largest laser show on water. The largest was in Hong Kong Harbor for the Handover celebrations in 1997.
