Quarter of Europeans aware of the St. Petersburg tercentenary
About 26% of Europeans interviewed by the Agency of Social Information knew of the celebration of the St. Petersburg tercentenary, while 74% acknowledged their ignorance.
The poll showed that 57% of those who knew believed that the celebration of Russia’s Northern capital was a pan-European event, another 22% said this was an event of Russian scale and 13%, festivity only for the citizens of St. Petersburg.
People are best informed of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg in the nearest European capital Helsinki (74%). In Stockholm, the share of the well-informed respondents exceeded half (58%), while in all the other cities where the poll was conducted this share was smaller: 42% in Paris, 29% in Rome, 23% in Oslo, 18% in Copenhagen and 6% in Madrid.

1,500 people from 12 major cities of Western Europe including Amsterdam, Brussels, Vienna, Hamburg, Copenhagen, London, Madrid, Oslo, Paris, Rome, Stockholm and Helsinki were interviewed. The poll was conducted in the respondents’ native tongues from 20 April to 5 May, 2003.
